Membership in the IGHS is always FREE. The IGHS is an international society dedicated and committed to the research, documentation, education, and investigation of ghostly phenomena recorded through EVP, digital, film and video photography. The IGHS is a society of ghost believers, ghost hunters, and ghost researchers with over 14,000 members in 87 countries worldwide. ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ International Ghost Hunters Society Newsletter September 5, 2004 from McMinnville, Oregon Dr. Dave’s Notes: My Mother is doing better day by day. She is still dealing with problems associated with a collapsed lung, but overall, she is improving and will be moving out of Acute Care this coming week to a Rehab center. I do appreciate the prayers and positive energy directed toward her by so many people. I have received encouragement from around the world, from a high school student in South Africa to ghost hunters in Singapore, Scotland, England, Norway, Italy, France, Australia, and a host of other countries too numerous to mention. My heart was warmed by the responses that I have received. We want to thank the many people who submitted EVP segments for our Jeff Rense radio program, especially Jim Wyrick for all of the Gettysburg battlefield sounds. One of the interesting EVP segments said, “You will like death,” which suggests that death was more desirable than the hardships the soldier experienced at Gettysburg. It is amazing to listen to so many radio talk shows with various ghost hunters as guests. They all seem to fall into the same category when asked why about some aspect of ghost hunting. The most common response is “ I don't know.” Too bad these so called experts are not associated with the IGHS, if they were, they would know the why's. We got an email asking for our help. Carl Horstrup at Lane Community College, Eugene, Oregon is asking for help in locating someone to be who may be interested in instructing a 20 to 30 hour class, GHOST HUNITNG 101, winter term which begins in Jan. 2005. If you live near Eugene, Oregon, drop an email to Carl at horstrupc@lanecc.edu. This is amazing as more colleges and universities are offering courses now in Ghost Hunting, ten years ago, this was unheard of, but with the ghost hunting community exploding with new ghost hunters, this is a positive step forward for educational institutions. These educational institutions are acknowledging that ghosts are real and that their students can learn how to begin this wonderful hobby. If any of our readers can help out, they will have a blast. We will be glad to help them as a resource. Remember a few weeks ago when I talked about a great video of a ghost named Peter filmed in a hallway? Several of our readers did some in-depth research and discovered this video of the ghost boy was a hoax. The story was fictional and video faked to create an urban legend by using still photos and the video. This hoax is an excellent example of how someone can create an urban legend on the Internet. I thought it was a valid video. I should have known that anything that good has got to be a fake. So if you fell for the “My Son Peter” video, welcome to the egg on my face club. I want to thank those of you who researched this video and discovered that it was a hoax. We are proud to announce a new Associate IGHS Club, Midwest Haunts, has joined our IGHS ranks. The club host and produce a PBS show called Midwest Haunts. Their PBS show airs in 45 counties in NW Indiana and south Chicago. We have checked out their web site and found that they follow scientific protocols and they have no dust orbs posted on their web site as ghost orbs. It is refreshing to see a new web site that has not posted dozens of dust orb photos or photos taken in the rain and calling the rain orbs ghosts. Sharon has made up some new ghost charm necklaces using Yak Tail Bone carved into skulls, along with the carnelian and hematine semi-precious stones that are posted on the web site. I tried to suggest to her that she ought to weave a tale and say that little Tibetan monks gathered the Yak Tail Bones, carved them into skull beads and later carried them over the Himalayan Mountains so we could assembled them as part of the ghost charm jewelry, but she said someone might believe it. She said to tell them the truth; we acquired them in Oatman, Arizona, which is a “ghost town” in northwest Arizona that is now a tourist spot, the highlight being wild burros that roam the streets. Walking in the streets of Oatman can be a real experience; you must be careful of where you step, if you catch my drift. It was once a gold mining town that died and resurrected as a Western town. Dollar bills paper the walls of the saloon and restaurant and the ghost of the piano player reportedly still haunt the place. Several spirits, whose ectoplasmic images various ghost hunters have photographed, haunt the Oatman Hotel. The Yak Tail Skull Bone beads are truly unique, so check them out at http://www.ghostweb.com/carn2.html. Again, our hearts goes out to our Florida members as Hurricane Frances makes it's way across the state dumping an estimated twenty inches of rain. Our host server where our Ghostweb.com domain resides is located in Florida so we are crossing our fingers that when the power goes out, their backup generators will keep our web site up and running. These hurricanes are getting larger and uglier each year. It is hard to imagine that his current monster is the size of the great state of Texas. The worst we have to deal with are rattlesnakes and desert vipers, not monster hurricanes the size of Texas or the resulting tornados that spawn from the storm. I pray that the Labor Day Weekend will not be one that brings grief and anguish to our members because of this storm. The flooding will be a nightmare to deal with after the storm passes; the low elevation for Florida is not conducive to good drainage. Sharon lived for twenty years in Fort Walton Beach in the panhandle of Florida; she has some memories of previous storms that she would wish on no one. We will be conducting a major investigation in a few weeks at the site of a historical building that will be undergoing a restoration process. This building is spooky as heck and we hope to get some good EVP recordings. We have been doing yearly investigations at this site for the last four years and have decided to include the story in a future book. After the investigation, we are scheduled for a filming for Comcast cable G4TechTV in October. We will be doing a satellite linkup with the LA network, where we will highlight our new book and talk about our experiences traveling in our RV and investigating America's most haunted sites. We plan on starting the testing with our ultrasonic EVP recorder during this same period. We have had to put off the testing because of our emotional concerns regarding my Mother, but now that ordeal is passing so we can start field testing phase. We will keep everyone updated on the progress once we begin the field testing. Happy trails. Sharon’s Notes: I know it is still September, but I get the feeling that Fall is just around the corner. With the changing leaves and cooler temperatures, comes the stirring anticipation of the second biggest holiday of the year and the gateway to the holiday season. While visiting Dave’s Mother on Saturday, we have to walk by the gift shop to get to her Acute Care Wing. The gift show has Halloween decoration in all the windows. Dave told me to sit on the bench next to the gift shop and wait for a moment. He walked into the gift shop and came out a few minutes later carrying a bag. It seems we have added a new member to our traveling family, a twelve inch stuffed ghost! Dave joked that we should call him Boo and when our Corgi dog, named BooBoo get together, they would be Boo and BooBoo. Yea, right I said. Halloween, the night when ghosts, goblins, monsters, pirates, fairy princesses and a full gamut of underworld characters come out to roam the streets after darkness falls. Children's laughter fills the air and warms our hearts like the hot apple cider we sip sitting in front of the fireplace. This is the time of year when nature returns to hibernate and folks start pulling out their winter coats. Already, magazines are publishing the Halloween issues and stores are putting the new releases on magazine stands. There are some very unique ideas for parties, costumes, freaky foods, and eerie decorations coming out this year. The emphasis is on having fun this Halloween without having to go bust, doing it. Halloween is a great time of the year for kids and adults alike. Kids can really be a part of planning parties and participating in making decorations and helping prepare some of the goodies. There are lots of fun things family members can do together to prepare for the night of, All Hallows Eve. Here are two recipes for holiday fare, to inspire the fun in everyone. Ghost Goodies 1 bag (10 oz.) regular size marshmallows ¼ cup butter or margarine 6 cups crisp rice cereal or popcorn 12 oz. white candy coating, melted Chocolate chips or raisins (for eyes) In a large pot, combine butter and marshmallows. Cook over medium or medium-low heat until melted, stirring to combine well. Gradually stir in cereal or popcorn, mixing well. Use approximately ½ to 1 cup of mixture to form each ghost shape, setting each aside on waxed paper to cool completely. Once shapes have cooled, there are two recommended ways of coating them with the melted white candy coating. #1 Dip each shape into the melted candy coating and replace on waxed paper to cool, then add eyes and/or other features. #2 Place shapes on a cooling rack set over waxed paper and ladle the melted candy coating over the shapes. Cover each one completely. Decorate while still warm. Makes around 12. Shadow Specters (Shadow People) This recipe is similar to the making and shaping of ghost goodies, only the ingredients differ. ¼ cup butter 6 oz. dark chocolate 1 bag (10 oz.) regular size marshmallows 4 cups puffed rice cereal 1 cup peanuts 1 cup raisins Cinnamon candies or colored coated candies (for eyes) In a large pot, over medium heat, melt the chocolate and butter. Once the chocolate has melted, mix in marshmallows, stirring constantly. When mixture is melted and well mixed, combine cereal, peanuts and raisins. Mix all the ingredients well and remove from heat. Using ½ to 1 cup of mixture for each shape form into ghostly figures and set on waxed paper to cool. While warm, press two red cinnamon candies in, for the eyes. Ghosts have always been a major figure in Halloween. It has only been recently that another figure has shown itself, which are now known as the shadow people. Are they evil because they are a dark figure we catch out of the corner of our eye? From what Dave and I have learned over the years, these figures are no more demonic or evil than other forms of ghosts seen throughout history. Black does not mean evil, but is a combination of all colors, including white. Our society teaches us that black is evil or demonic while white is good and pure. That is simply a stereotype created by Hollywood with good guys wear white hats and outlaws wearing black hats. This is not the case when encountering a shadow person, as you might want to treat them in the same manner as you would any ghostly presence. Treat them with respect and they will treat you in the same manner. Happy Haunting! Ghost Charm Jewelry: Sharon has created five different designs for her sterling silver ghost charm necklaces, with either carnelian and turquoise or carnelian and hematine. The sterling silver ghost charm measures about an inch in length. She also has created some beautiful jewelry by wire wrapping stunning carnelian nuggets that we found in the desert near Deming, New Mexico. The carnelian nuggets were tumbled for five weeks to bring out their natural beauty. She also has earrings with carnelian and combinations of either turquoise or hematine.
